Holz Hausen

With so much wood to stack, we realized we’d need to get creative in finding places to put all of it. We stacked much of it between other tall pines. But we also didn’t want piles of firewood everywhere you looked. With a few Google searches, I found a few simple structures we could build to better consolidate the stacks in a specific area. But then I found this method. The Holz Hausen. I understand it has its roots in Germany, and is all the wood-stacking-rage in Europe.

After trying it out his weekend, the Holz Hausen was declared a success! The finished product measures eight feet in diameter by six feet tall. It is completely freestanding, very sturdy, and looks like a magnificent sculpture in the woods.

(For the record, my iPhone tracked nearly 13,000 steps creating this structure: I’d take ten steps to the split wood pile, pick up four pieces of wood, take ten steps back to the Holz Hausen, stack the said four pieces of wood, and repeat…..a few hundred times.)

Man, I was tired the next day. But it was so worth it. I love beautiful and functional!
